Oil on Canvas Painting of the WWII "LIBERTY SHIP" FRED C. STEBBINSSigned by the Artist W. PISKOV dated 1947. 17"x 23-3/4"x 1-1/2" Unframed.Description: This painting is an excellent realistic and dramatic detailed depiction of the merchant steamship painted in the traditional side view ship's portrait with what looks like the smoke of battle. I have not been successful in finding any information on the artist, but it is quite possible he was a seaman who had been stationed on the ship during the war.Ship History:"Liberty ship" was the name given to the EC2 type ship designed for "Emergency" construction by the United States Maritime Commission in World War II. Liberty ships were nicknamed "ugly ducklings" by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.Named after Fred C. Stebbins (1921-1942) Merchant seaman lost on the "S.S. Jonathan Sturges" when it was torpedoed in the North Atlantic 1942.Built in 1945, Official Number 247059, St. John's River Shipbuilding Co.1961 Reported transferred to US Navy and disposed of (scuttled or sunk as target ship).Excerpt from autobiography of Dan Heffner -SN/YN, USN 1960-1962,USNR 1959, 1960-1962, 1963-65 "My first trip to sea was the end of February or early March 1960 when we got underway for Norfolk, Virginia with our later destination being Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Puerto Rico. Before we left 'Norfolk-, two old liberty ships (USS George Steers and USSFred C. Stebbins) were towed to Viequez island near Roosevelt Roads. The experimental mines were used for tests on these ships with the ship sinking as the end result. This was the first time I ever saw a ship sink. It was quite an unusual sight. Before the second ship sunk, we were allowed to take target practice at it with our twin 40 mm anti-aircraft guns."Names of Jacksonville’s 82 Liberty Ships Note History of Era and Remember LegendsThe Jacksonville shipyard where Liberty Ships were built was one of 18 emergency shipyards nationwide. Construction of the Jacksonville yard began in 1942 and was part of a partnership with a New York firm of contractors and the local Merrill-Stevens Dry Dock & Repair Company, known locally for shipbuilding and ship repair since the nineteenth century. In all, the Jacksonville yard produced 82 of the country’s 2,700 Liberty Ships. Only the Brown and the Jeremiah O’Brien survive as intact ships; however, three other hulls are still afloat, and among them is the S.S. Arthur M. Huddell, built in Jacksonville.Liberty Ships were traditionally named for individuals who were no longer living and who had made a significant contribution to American life. Some of the later ships were named for merchant seamen who died during the war. The names of Jacksonville Liberty Ships reveal both area and national history and sentiment of the time. Liberty Ships built in Jacksonville and the dates of completion are listed below:Fred C. Stebbins, Jan. ’44; (+82 others)
