BANFFSHIRE INFO:Banffshirebuilt in 1894 at Newcastle-on-Tyne (NE England) for the Scottish Shire Line. She was built by Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, Ltd. 5,736 Gross Registered Tons. Her signal Letters were NPGF, Official Number 104587. Apparently, she was torpedoed in 1917. Her name changed toBrodness(circa1915),but it was stillBanffshirein the 1915-16Lloyd's Register. Neither names are in the 1918-19Lloyd's.The house flag is in Lloyd's Book of House Flags and Funnels, 1904. It is that of the Shire Line, of which there were two. This one is for Turnbull, Martin and Company. Note also the funnel in the painting is light colored. They utilized a buff or yellowish colored funnel. Lloyd's 1915-16 refers to Turnbull, Martin & Co. as managers of the Scottish Shire Line, but they may also be owners. Lloyd's also shows that SS Banffshire was built in November 1894 (SEE LAST PHOTO FOR EXERPT FROM LLOYD'S). This is probably the launch date of the hull. Completion of the entire vessel may have taken as much as a year. The painting could be the Shire Line's commissioned painting, or it could be her first voyage and done for the captain or some other officer in her.Final days from SHIPS HIT DURING WW I - Sunk off the coast of Italy ("Bansffshire" name changed to "Brodness")NameBrodnessTypeSteamerGRT5,736 tonsCountryBritishBuilt1894BuilderHawthorn, Leslie & Co., Ltd., NewcastleOperatorBrodness SS.
