These two volumes are original bound copies from Punch, magazine of humour and satire, which ran from 1841-2002. A very British institution renowned internationally for its wit and irreverence, it introduced the term"Cartoon"as we know it today andpublished the works of great comic writers and poets such as W.M. Thackeray, Mayhew, P.G. Wodehouse, Sir John Betjeman, Alan Coren and Miles Kington amongst others. Its political and social cartoons swayed governments, capturing life in detail from the 19th and 20th centuries.Item Description: 2 Vols., Bound to matchPublished by D. Bogue, 1847 & 1848. (illus.)"Includes ancient bores, story-telling bores, pretentious bores, a few chapters on feminine bores (including strong-minded women bores and "the blue" -- who, amongst other faults, "can write an ode but not darn a sock," heaven forfend), the man-with-a-grievance bore, country acquaintance bore, theatrical bores, and (perhaps the volume's saving grace) a chapter on philoprogenitive boreism. Snark will never die."The Natural History of the Idler Upon TownSmith, Albert R., Hine, H. G. (illus.)Albert Richard Smith (May 24, 1816 May 23, 1860), was an English author, entertainer, and mountaineer. The son of a surgeon, he studied medicine in London and in Paris, and his first literary effort was an account of his life there, which appeared in the Mirror. He gradually abandoned his medical work in favour of writing. Though a journalist rather than a literary figure, he was one of the most popular writers of his time, and a favourite humorist. He was one of the early contributors to Punch and was also a regular contributor to Richard Bentley's Miscellany, in whose pages his first and best known book, the novel The Adventures of Mr Ledbury, appeared in 1842. He also wrote a series of so-called natural histories: The Gent (1847), The Ballet Girl (1847), 'Stuck-Up' People (1847), Humbugs (1847) andThe Idler upon Town (1848)."Despite the seemingly trivial role of a humor magazine in society,Punchcan be said to have played a significant role in the development ofsatirein the modern Western world.Punchcontinued the tradition of European satire seen in much of Europe's history from theFrench Revolutionthrough the World Wars.Satire is an effective and often ingenious method of propagating unpalatable ideas in the more easily accepted form of humor. The establishment of a long-running satire magazine such asPunchprovided a stable outlet for writers and artists working in the genre and provided a central source of such content for consumers. The existence of a constant home to possibly unpopular ideas expressed in a funny fashion supports the extremely important freedom of speech that is prized in today's moderndemocracies." - New World Encyclopedia`4`,RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Feog4d71f%2B%3E%604%60-15a17c1e079-0x114-->
